The Baltimore Business Journal releases its Largest Private Sector Employers annually. Often, the region’s major healthcare systems and universities top the list. The University of Maryland Medical System, Johns Hopkins University, Johns Hopkins Health System round out the top three employers in 2022, with Mercy Health Services landing at No. 9.

Located in some of the most popular neighborhoods in Baltimore, including Downtown and Mount Vernon, employees of these medical systems and universities have access to many safe and modern living options in nearby communities. For example, Chasen Companies has 11 apartment buildings in Mount Vernon alone which all feature apartments with open floor plans, designer finishes, in-home fitness amenities, and 24/7 access to coworking space.

Johns Hopkins & Mercy Medical Center

Johns Hopkins employs more than 50,000 employees. Johns Hopkins Hospital is one of the top five hospitals in the nation for all 33 years of the U.S. News and World Report rankings. Mercy Health Services has more than 5,500 employees, most of whom are local.

Many employees of these institutions choose to live in Fells Point and Harbor East areas. For example, The Caroline is located just one mile south of Johns Hopkins and 1.3 miles from Mercy Medical Center. The historic waterfront community of Fells Point is home to dozens of bars, restaurants, shops, museums, music venues, and more. Meanwhile, Harbor East is an affluent community known for its vibrant dining and shopping. A water taxi and waterfront promenade make it convenient to get around the harbor area, connecting Fells Point and Harbor East to other neighborhoods such as Canton and the Inner Harbor.

Another popular community for employees to reside is Mount Vernon. The City’s Cultural District, Mount Vernon, is situated half a mile north of Mercy Medical Center and about 1-2 miles from the Johns Hopkins University campus and Hospital. Many of Chasen’s luxury apartments for rent in Mount Vernon are transformed from grand old mansions, once belonging to the city’s most elite and fashionable families.

University of Maryland Medical System

The University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS)  is an academic teaching hospital in downtown Baltimore that employs more than 27,000 people.

UMMS employees and students are drawn to Downtown and the neighboring Inner Harbor communities, both of which make up the focal point of Baltimore City. The bustling business district is also a hub of entertainment, sports, cuisine, and waterfront activities. The Genesis is a modern apartment complex located less than half a mile from UMMS and just steps from the Royal Farms Arena and Lexington Market. The James is located less than a mile from UMMS on St. Paul Place. Additionally, 1 Calvert Plaza, a historic downtown building, will be developed into a new 15-story 173-unit residential property. Located in the heart of downtown, the property will be called The Plaza and is set to open in 2023.

Another neighborhood to consider nearby is Federal Hill. Residents of Federal Hill apartments such as The Darcy can conveniently experience many restaurants and pubs along with easy access to UMMS, the Inner Harbor, Oriole Park at Camden Yards, and M&T Bank Stadium.
